Coffee and Not Economics

Sometimes I freak myself out when I sit back and think about how rapidly things have changed. I cannot fathom that I used to watch the solar eclipse, sitting on the road, using DIY methods to look at shadows. Now, in today’s world, you can watch a solar eclipse online through someone’s live stream or YouTube channel.

The evolution has been crazy, and some of it for the good, some for the worse. This got me thinking about how a common factor we all talk about is how things are not as cushy as they used to be financially. And there are various contributing factors to this, from the pandemic to the evolution of technology to the war.

When we were growing up, I don’t recall our parents buying coffee from outside regularly or eating out regularly. I can’t speak for everyone, but I didn’t see my parents do this. Any meal outside, from a full lunch to a small chewing gum, was a treat. It was something we did once a month or when it was someone’s birthday. Otherwise, everything was home-cooked, from baking cookies to making a mixture during Diwali.

But this got me thinking further about how a lot of the consumption (and I am a big practitioner of this) comes from exposure to social media. I see someone trying out a new cafe, so I immediately add it to my list of places to visit. I see someone eating pancakes, and I immediately want to go to brunch the next day. It’s like an unstoppable bouncing ball.

And don’t even get me started on the comments section. Sometimes I feel like I have a preconceived notion about a place just because the comments think it’s good or bad. Side note: Big kudos to the funny comments – they always get me.

Anyway. I don’t know what the point of this rant is. I know there is an economic explanation as well, but I am deciding to leave facts and figures out of this and just spewing out random thoughts on a Friday. Plus, this is my blog page, so I can choose to do that. Don’t come at me in the comments (unless it’s funny).

Signing off! Happy FRIDAY 🎉
