We are amidst a pandemic, but that’s no reason to ignore the environment we live in. In fact, if there’s anything that this pandemic has taught us, it’s that we have been a major contributing factor to the unhealthy state of the earth. With pollution levels dropping, dolphins reappearing and me being able to see the suburbs from my condo, I think it’s safe to say that by just staying home, we’re able to see a difference.
But what more can we do? Here’s a list of things you can do during this pandemic to help contribute to a better environment:
- Continue recycling: Continue to segregate your trash. Including some of your exes and toxic friends. But remember to also cut down on what you throw away – some friends and exes are good too, but you just don’t know it yet (or you do).
- Water: I know we are washing our hands, but remember to switch off the tap when lathering your hands with soap. Not sure our tears will be sufficient enough for any water wastage in the future.
- Conserve energy: Switch off lights and outlets in rooms that you’re not using. Sometimes sitting in the dark and scaring some folks is fun too. Additionally, try to use energy efficient bulbs where possible.
- Educate: Talk to people you live with about the environment. What can you do to make a difference? What will you do differently once this pandemic is over?
- Shopping: Try to bring your own reusable bag to avoid using plastic covers at the store. I know some stores don’t allow this due to covid-19 at the moment, so make sure you are aware of the rules before you do so.
- Gardening: If you have the space, plant a few seeds and see how they grow. If you live in a smaller space, you can start with potted plants. You can even plant small garnish based leaves to use in your cooking like coriander leaves or mint leaves – making your way of living slightly more sustainable.
- Get some fresh air: Stand on your balcony for a few minutes to soak in some sunshine and fresh air, or go out for a small walk, if your area permits it, while maintaining social distance. Emphasis on small and maintaining social distance.
- Continue to do this everyday – even if it’s not Earth Day. Some of us can’t handle staying in now, but imagine if we don’t treat our environment correctly; we’ll see a day where breathing outside may not be viable. Let’s hope that day never arrives.
Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home and do your part in making our Earth a place we can treat respectfully. Our current situation should teach us to take care of our planet.
