Colour. It’s around us. Everywhere.
A rainbow is a colour of happiness, after a storm. A pot of gold. A happy memory. A science class. VIBGYOR. Pride. LGBTQ.
Red. A strong, vibrant sight. Apples. Stop. Danger. Red Lips. Wine.
Green. It’s a colour of nature. Trees. Leaves. Environment. Frogs. Herbs. A blunt.
Blue. A calm yet deep feeling. The sea. Waves. Skies. Denim. Sadness.
White. A pure colour. Bearing peace. Weddings. Cleanliness. Weddings. Privilege.
Black. A blank colour. Starry nights. Casual t-shirts. Little black dress. Lives matter.
Colour is taken for granted at times. We assume everyone can see the same. Some people are colour blind. Some are completely blind. But one thing to keep in mind is that one colour can have so many meanings. Like the examples above.
So it would be helpful to apply the same rule to human beings. Just because a person is white, doesn’t mean they’re all privileged. Just because a person is black, doesn’t mean they’re all ready to attack you. Just because someone is brown, doesn’t mean they work in IT.
Taking a technical turn, to see colour, you need light. When light shines on an object, our eyes only see the colours that are bounced off or reflected. So the same way with a person, take the time to reflect and discover who they are. Take the time to actually see their personality and not their colour. Their colour is their appearance, but every colour has a story behind it. And it could be related to their appearance or not. But that shouldn’t matter.
I don’t know if this rant made any sense or not, but we’ve been reading a lot about how people are judged by their ethnicity, appearance or looks. In a world where we have easy access to the internet to learn about other cultures and ethnicities, this kind of backward thinking needs to stop.
Now if you don’t mind, I’ve to go drink my black coffee with white milk and brown sugar.
