“Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Only assholes do that.” – Murakami
And true it is. We all have problems. And we all deem our problems to be the biggest. But in comparison to what someone else is going through, our problems don’t even matter. Or vice versa.
I recently learnt that in this day and age of social media, there’s no room for raw emotion. We all have to watch our backs. Who do we truly express ourselves to? The 795 friends on Facebook? Or the 800 followers on Instagram? That too using emoticons. Can you express your true self to them? Aren’t you afraid that your bad day might just not get you enough views? Or are you thrilled that your horrible day will get you over a million views?
Every third person is an influencer. Why? Because she does make-up tutorials? Because he watches videos and reacts to them live?
We live in a world of facade. Where people who are actually making a difference have no recognition whatsoever. And those who are doing nothing, get all the credit. How is that fair? How did the world become so…dead inside? So governed by social media?
Don’t get me wrong. There are many people getting ample recognition for their good deeds and using social media and fame for the right reasons. But there’s also a good number who use their fame for…more fame.
It’s so easy for us to point fingers at each other and blame each other for our respective short-comings. We’re only good at that. But if we focussed on self-improvement. On helping the world to become a better place – we wouldn’t have to fake it.
Empathy. Humility. Basic human courtesy. That’s what the world needs. Use social media to spread these things instead of “Answer these 5 questions and find out what fruit your face looks like”. No thanks. I know and have always known, my face is a potato.
